Hummingbird 9 by SeanAvery Hummingbird 9 by SeanAvery
Hummingbird commission — one of the last sculptures I'll be doing for a little while!

Width: 35cm
Height: 25 cm
Depth: 10 cm

CD shards (over 40 CDs used)
Wire mesh frame
Hot glue
Gold paint
1 week work time

I use kitchen scissors to cut the shapes I need out of the CDs, then arrange each shard by colour and size. I then hot glue those shards one-by-one to a wire mesh frame to create a natural feather pattern. They usually take a week to make, maybe longer depending on how motivated I am to get them done!

Excellent work. My hat is off to you for how smooth and clean your edges are.

Having done a couple of pieces with CDs myself, I just have to ask... how in the WORLD do you get such clean cuts with scissors? I've tried using tin snips and EMT shears (penny cutters) only to have the CDs fracture with no discernible pattern. I finally had to resort to using a coping saw and files to get the shapes I needed.

Thanks! I just use kitchen scissors, I really don't have any other trick for it ...

Were they different colored cds or were they all the same color? Because I see that you have some dark blues and such in there. IT turned out really nicely but looks really sharp ^^

Wow, this looks really stunning. I imagine that the bird hung up outside creates beautiful lightings?
I'd love a "how to" (for geeks like me ^^ )!
Are you selling birds like that?
